Gifts for Dad – One Man’s Quest
His two daughters had bought him a jumper that comprised of an eclectic mix of primary colours. They had made him a breakfast of cold toast and coffee. And had then proceeded to paint his nails in a heady combination of red, purple and pink. Being the dad he was, he didn’t have the heart to tell them no, despite arriving at work looking like he’d been dressed by Jackson Pollock.
One year on, this particular dad decided to drop a few subtle hints. He didn’t want to hurt the feelings of his little girls. And yet the thought of another day spent in the guise of a butch Boy George was more than he could bear. As such, he resolved to sit down one evening and make them a list of things he’d really quite like. After all, it couldn’t be that hard for his family to find a few gifts for dad that didn’t involve lighting him up like a Christmas tree.
Over the course of an hour or so, he created a list aimed at making sure there’d be no such repetition of last year’s (sweet) debacle. He called it ‘Gift Ideas for Dad’ and carefully categorised all of the suggestions into three separate sections – ‘Cool Gifts for Dad’, ‘Unique Gifts for Dad’ and ‘Good Gifts for Dad’. It read as follows…
Cool Gifts for Dad
1. West Ham Football Club Book – you can even personalise it for me!
2. A driving experience day – I rather fancy having a go in an Aston Martin! And your Mum’s always saying I’m like James Bond, isn’t she?!
3. I’ve seen these spoof magazine covers, including a ‘Top Dad’ one that looks like the Top Gear front cover. That might be fun to have on my desk.
Unique Gifts for Dad
1. Some cufflinks engraved with my initials. That way, I can look really smart when I have a meeting at work.
2. A personalised mug to stop Mum nicking my coffee in the mornings!
3. I’ve found a website that sells personalised jigsaws that show an aerial shot of our road. That might be fun.
Good Gifts for Dad
1. Some personalised single malt whisky.
2. I rather fancy an original newspaper from the day I was born. You can find them online.
3. There are these West Ham DVDs available that have highlights of their FA Cup Finals. Wouldn’t mind the 1964 one against Preston. You’ve heard me talk about Bobby Moore, right?
In truth, the list was more in hope than expectation. The reality was he still assumed he’d be waking up ready to be transformed into Pat Butcher. He was wrong. His list had gone down a storm and over his cold toast and coffee, he was presented with cufflinks and an ‘I? Daddy’ mug. Even his Mrs had treated him to the West Ham Football Book. He wasn’t, however, able to wangle his way out of having his nails painted – this time in sky blue and claret… the West Ham colours.
